Frequently Asked Questions
Clear, straightforward answers regarding process, safety, tax treatment, and liquidity.
Under SEBI (Alternative Investment Funds) Regulations, the statutory minimum commitment required from an individual investor is ₹1 Crore (or ₹25 Lakhs for employees/directors of the AIF manager).
Unlike mutual funds where your entire investment is paid upfront, Category I and II AIFs typically operate on a capital commitment model. You commit a sum (e.g. ₹1 Crore), and the fund manager draws down capital in tranches (capital calls) over 2 to 3 years as viable investments are identified.
Category I and II AIFs enjoy tax pass-through status under the Income Tax Act. The fund does not pay tax; income and capital gains are passed directly to the investor and taxed as if made directly by the investor. Category III AIFs are generally taxed at the investment fund level at maximum marginal rates, making post-tax distributions tax-free to investors.
Category I and II AIFs are close-ended funds typically having a tenure of 5 to 7 years (with potential 1 to 2-year extensions subject to investor approval). Category III AIFs can be open-ended or close-ended with shorter liquidity cycles.
