Frequently Asked Questions
Clear, straightforward answers regarding process, safety, tax treatment, and liquidity.
As per SEBI regulations, the statutory minimum investment required to open a Portfolio Management Services (PMS) account is ₹50 Lakhs per investor. This can be contributed in cash or by transferring an existing portfolio of approved equity shares.
In a mutual fund, investors buy units of a pooled fund holding 50 to 100+ stocks. In PMS, a dedicated Demat account is opened in your name, and 15 to 25 hand-picked stocks are purchased directly, giving you complete ownership of shares, direct dividend credits, and greater manager flexibility.
Because shares are held directly in your Demat account, capital gains are realized whenever the fund manager sells a stock. You are taxed directly on individual short-term (20%) and long-term (12.5%) capital gains. Your PMS house provides an audited annual tax computation statement for your CA.
Most PMS providers offer two options: (1) Fixed Fee Model (typically 1.5% to 2.5% p.a. calculated on daily AUM) or (2) Performance-Linked Model (lower fixed fee of ~1% p.a. plus 10%–15% profit share on returns generated above a hurdle rate, protected by a High Water Mark).
